Herman Miller Good Design Challenge!

We had a great time participating in the Good Design Challenge sponsored by Herman Miller in conjunction with the Austin Museum of Art!  This design competion challenged Austin designers to take a classic Eames Plastic Molded Armchair and “reinvent” it as a functional piece of art based on “what inspires us”.   Inspired by collaboration, we worked with local Austin fiber designers,  White Bear Fibers to hand dye custom cashmere/wool yarns.  The custom yarn was carefully woven through a series of small, drilled holes creating this modern honeycomb pattern.

Here is a link to a fantastic video that our friends, Doug  & Tyler, at White Bear Fibers created!  It illustrates the entire design and production process…

Our design statement:

“We are inspired by collaboration in nature and in the built environment.  The amalgamation of creative ideas and individual talents that together is greater than the sum of its’ parts.  Like bees in a hive, each member of a team contributes unique abilities, working in tandem to compose the most appropriate solution.  Bees begin the construction of their hive from different places, weaving the honeycomb simultaneously.  Creating identical hexagons, they meet in the middle to produce a single unified structure.  The junction points are assembled so precisely that they meld into a cohesive whole.  This is the power of teamwork and the results are sweet!”
